Icon Series 3
Acrylic, Gesso on reclaimed wood panel
I have recently been inspired by the haunting ancient faces of the Mummy Portraits from Roman Egypt where the image is depicted on coffin lids and wooden panels and where the paint is peeling and missing over time. I always try to convey a presence and stillness in my paintings. This particular work portrays a young girl whose beauty and image is fading. Painted in layers on reclaimed wood.

Icon Series 1
Gesso, Acrylic, Oil on Reclaimed Wooden Panel
£600.00
43 x 31 x 2.5 cm
My work is heavily influenced by religious imagery, drawing references from iconography and ancient frescoes where the paint and plaster is peeling away. I aim to create a sense of serenity and stillness, a faded beauty, however, with decay just under the surface, portraying the aging process which I find endlessly haunting, fascinating and beautiful. I am motivated by all things old, be it weathered and aged wood, eroded and crumbling stone or the patina found on rusting metal. Nature does it so much better, but I am bound somehow to try and recreate this in my own work.

Icon Series 2
Acrylic, Oil, Gesso on Reclaimed Wooden Panel
£500.00
53 x 49 x 2 cm
In my recent paintings my technique is one of layering, sanding and scratching away areas to reveal the underlying textures and colours. The paint is applied thinly over a gesso ground, areas are then sanded back to reveal the layers below. I also scratch into the surface to create the impression of age and decay, often using reclaimed wood and incorporating the aged patina which adds to the sense of history.
